Work Experience

Editorial Copywriter at zulily, Inc.

Seattle, WA

Nov. 2013 â€“ Present

zulily, Inc. is a flash-sales website offering daily deals to its nationwide customer base. As an editorial copywriter, I create compelling, informative copy for the daily email sent to our members. I also help to manage and curate the more than 100 sales on the website each day, working closely with creative and merchandising teams to craft custom descriptions for high-profile brands like Cole Haan, Disney and XBox. My high-quality copy and ability to work efficiently on deadline makes me a go-to person on my team for outside projects. For example, I’ve assumed marketing duties such as writing SEO-optimized landing pages for our website and keyword-rich blog posts. See samples of my work here.

Teaching Assistant at Nazarbayev University

Astana, Kazakhstan

Sept. 2012 - Sept. 2013

Nazarbayev University is the flagship English-language higher education institution located in Astana, Kazakhstan. As a writing teaching assistant for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, I designed and launched a Writing Center to help students with their assignments. I established an appointment and record-keeping system, as well as a set of resources on citations, grammar and plagiarism. I conducted one-on-one tutorials with student writers to review their writing assignments, provide feedback for improvement, and assist them in improving their writing skills. I worked closely with faculty members across disciplines to determine their needs over each semester.

The Berkman Center for Internet & Society

Cambridge, MA

June. 2012 - Aug. 2012

The Berkman Center is an interdisciplinary research center affiliated with the prestigious Harvard Law School that studies the intersection between internet and society. As a research intern for the freedom of expression projects, I researched and updated extensive country profiles on online censorship. I blogged on relevant issues of Internet regulation, governance and censorship, and used social media to connect with activists and researchers around the world. Tapping into my academic background in Russian Studies, I wrote a report based on a comparison survey of Russian-language and English-language bloggers. I also qualitatively coded websites for a project on networked discourse that contributed to a 2013 paper Social Mobilization and the Networked Public Sphere: Mapping the SOPA-PIPA Debate. See other samples of my work here.

Imaging Systems Inc.

Madison, WI

Aug. 2010 - June 2012

Imaging Systems, Inc. is a family-owned business that sells scanner and microfilm equipment across the world. As a data entry specialist, I updated their websites and maintained accurate online inventory counts using inventory software (Fishbowl) and an e-commerce CMS. I also streamlined the intake of new and used parts into the warehouse, and helped to hire and train new employees. I worked part-time while maintaining a full class load as a graduate student and maintaining a near perfect GPA.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette

Green Bay, WI

Oct. 2005 - Aug. 2010

The Green Bay Press-Gazette is an award-winning, mid-size daily newspaper covering northeastern Wisconsin. As a metro reporter, I covered suburban communities with a focus on municipal government, business and education.

I also was the only daily newspaper reporter in Wisconsin to cover a Native American tribe as part of my regular beat. I wrote breaking news and feature stories on the Oneida Tribe of Indians, and tracked federal Indian policy changes and their effects on local tribal issues. In 2008, I was recognized by the Milwaukee Press Club for public service/public education reporting after a lengthy feature on land purchases by the Oneida Tribe.

I lead our newspaper's coverage of elections during a high-profile congressional race in 2006 and the presidential election in 2008. I sharpened my digital and multimedia skills by helping post stories on the website, and edited audio and video components to complement my stories. I collaborated with fellow reporters and editors to launch an entertainment blog "Channel Surfing" that focussed on television, film and pop culture. See samples of my work here.
